SOUL CELLAR & ANGRY BADGER RECORDS LAUNCH "JUBILEE"
One of Southampton's finest live venues and one of the city's most exciting independent record labels have teamed up in a bid to give the city's unsigned bands a chance to play higher profile shows. The Soul Cellar and Angry Badger Records are launching their "Jubilee" Club Nights in July which will see members of such heavyweights as Oasis, The Smiths and The Bluetones playing alongside the South's finest new bands.

"Working on Angry Badger Records I have a lot of ambitions, ultimately I would like to see Southampton and the South Coast being recognised for producing great music and want to see some acts breaking through to the mainstream." explains Jules Aplin, founder of Angry Badger Records. "Both Jubilee and Rock The Loft are aimed at bridging the gap between mainstream and ’support acts’ and giving local bands the chance to play to bigger audiences and prove how good they are."

The first Jubilee event takes place on 16th July with Tom Hingley of Inspiral Carpets playing live. Also lined up are Mike Joyce of The Smiths on 30th July, Mark Morriss of The Bluetones on 6th August and The Vortex who feature Bonehead (ex-Oasis guitarist) on 20th August. Amongst the support acts for these nights will be Moody Tuesday, Long Shore Drift, Doyle & The Four Fathers, The Rising, Lost Morals and Mark Rooney.

"This is just the start of things to come," enthuses Jules. "Each night will be an event and we will play around with the format to keep it fresh. The Mike Joyce night for instance will have a Q&A session with Joyce answering questions on the recording of Meat Is Murder and then DJing later in the night!"

So how did they arrive at the name Jubilee? "We wanted to come up with a title that would sum up the theme of the night whilst not being too restrictive," states Jules. "'Jubilee' is actually a Blur track on 'Parklife' so fulfilled the ‘indie’ tag but also has that ‘British’ punk feel to it and is evocative of the spirit we wanted to create around the nights. Old skool club nights. We want people to come along to the Jubilee nights without even necessarily knowing who is on the bill, just confident that the Jubilee tag will ensure a quality show."

Jules and the Soul Cellar team are very clear on what they want to achieve with "Jubilee". "Firstly we just want to have a platform to put on some of our own favourite acts!" he smiles. "It would be great to make ‘indie’ cool again, the word seems to have lost some of its meaning over the last few years and this is a chance to remind people (and perhaps introduce some people) what the true indie tag used to mean by showcasing both classic artists alongside the new school. It is also hard for local acts to get a chance to support ‘big names’ so this is another element we are adding to the shows. Each night will include hand picked South Coast supports."

NEW YORK DOLL AT THE BROOK? IT'S THE CRAZY TRUTH!!

Following the New York Dolls' triumphant set at Talking Heads in December last year, the band's lead guitarist Steve Conte is coming back to the South of England with his new band The Crazy Truth. Showcasing songs from his début solo album - simply titled "Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth" - Conte and the band will be playing live at The Brook on 26th July.

The new album features guest performances by Dolls front man David Johansen on harmonica, the soulful voices of Nikki Richards (Tina Turner/Madonna) and Catherine Russell (Al Green) and horns by Danny Ray (Sylvain Sylvain/ Johnny Thunders), Tom Timko (Stevie Wonder) and Kiku Collins (Beyonce).

Conte first became known to the music industry in the early 1990s as the songwriter and guitarist of the band Company of Wolves. He has since worked with artists such as Peter Wolf, Willy DeVille, Maceo Parker, Phoebe Snow, Billy Squier, Suzi Quatro, Jill Jones, Chuck Berry, Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, David Johansen & The Harry Smiths, Willie Nile to name but a few.

Musically The Crazy Truth have been said to lie somewhere between garage rock and punk blues with more than a hint of Latin-soul. Think the Stooges and the Stones versus Morphine and Tom Waits. Conte himself describes the overall vibe as 'classic roots with a modern twist.'

Joining Conte and his band will be Melodramas. The Southampton band have supported The New York Dolls at the aforementioned Talking Heads show last year. The band have also recently shared the stage with Foo Fighter Taylor Hawkins and his new band The Coat-Tail Riders and have played sold-out shows across the world in Australia, China, Vietnam and Kuwait. Having achieved all this from DIY 8-track recordings, the band caught the attention of Sam Williams (Supergrass, Noisettes, Go Team) with whom they are due to record their début album at the end of the year. Harnessing the pop eccentricities of The Coral, exuberance of early Blur and a chaotic rock 'n' roll live show, they are undoubtedly destined for big things in 2011.

IS THIS THING ON? YOU BET IT IS!

Earlier this year, Nick Tann released his staggeringly consistent new album "Don't Make Me Wait" through his own Pure Acoustica label. However the Eastleigh based singer/songwriter is not just about writing and playing great songs. His podcast "Is This Thing On?" is steadily increasing in popularity which saw him recently hit the landmark of 1,000 subscribers.

Used as a vehicle for playing unsigned and independent artists, the podcast was not originally put together for this purpose when it was first aired in October 2008. "It basically started off as a promotional thing for me to push my music," explains Nick. "I would talk about how the songs were recorded and written. It was pretty scripted. I did not do it very often to start with. I would not get any feedback at all except perhaps from mates. I started including one or two rants, using it as an audio blog."

Nick started using the site Reverb Nation to find out about other acts that were playing around the South Coast. "I was trying to find some gigs and came across a lot of really good music," states Nick. This led to Nick wanting to play these bands and songs himself. After looking into the statistics for his podcast, he found he had a healthy number of subscribers and therefore an audience.

"I found out that I had 527 subscribers without having put much effort in. It was then that I thought 'Fucking hell, I've got an audience here!'", he smiles. "I started putting more effort in, built a blog and advertised for more music to play."

The all new weekly "Is This Thing On?" podcast started life in January of this year with contributions from entertaining characters such as Apoc and Watch With Mothers. "Apoc's from Canada. He does a really interesting podcast. He has been in social media for years. He has done a critique on band's websites for 'Is This Thing On?' although we have a few different ideas as to what he'll do for me," explains Nick. "Watch With Mothers' podcast is a satirical rant about crap TV! They have over 2,000 subscribers. I was keen to get them involved and they review music that I send over to them in their own way!"

Having hit the personal goal of 1,000 subscribers, what are Nick's hopes for the podcast? "Ultimately I'd like to make some money from it!!" he laughs. "I am hoping to release a compilation album soon, made up of artists that have been played on the podcast. I am now aiming to get 2,000 subscribers. I need more local bands to send their music in! I get a lot from America sent to me now. Also bands from Iceland and all over Europe. It would be great to have more British unsigned bands sending their music to me."
